JISC IE Architecture external trends and their potential impact Andy Powell UKOLN, University of Bath a.powell@ukoln.ac.uk

JISC IE architecture JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Different picture… same architecture. Same layers, protocols, etc. JISC IE Architecture Standards Framework This talk considers recent technology trends and their potential impact…

Web services and SOAP JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Increased use of SOAP-based search interfaces to content providers and fusion-layer services – notably in the form of SRW – (in addition to Z39.50)…

Web services and SOAP (2) JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries …and expectation that SOAP will be used for shared service’s interfaces…

SOAP, WSDL and UDDI JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries …therefore, increased relevance of delivering JISC IE Service Registry using WSDL and UDDI… (note: current pilot IESR project).

IMS Digital Repositories JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Development of IMS Digital Repositories spec… same protocols (OAI, Z39.50, SOAP, OpenURL, etc.) but different metadata – IMS/LOM rather than DC. Need for ‘information services’ (in all layers) to disclose content to support e-learning. Note current CETIS/RDN/LTSN activity w.r.t UKCMF.

OpenURLs and e-Learning JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Release of OpenURL 1.0. Increased complexity/functionality. Growing interest in institutional resolver deployment. Growing interest in use of OpenURL in context of e- learning (re: IMS Digital Repositories spec).

The Google factor… JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Catalogues and indexes new to diagram… but arguably these deliver most of user’s perceived need currently in the form of library OPAC and Google. Google and Amazon APIs have done much to sell concept of m2m interfaces but little impact on services currently because of usage restrictions.

Institutional activities JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Significant institutional interest/activity in managing and providing access to intellectual output of institutions in the form of eprints.org, D-Space, uPortal, etc. But while hype is high there is little practical impact currently.

Commercial activities… JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Commercial publisher/aggregator interest in delivering ‘vertical’ portals thru relatively closed business arrangements… e.g. ISI Web of Knowledge, Ingenta ‘subject portal’ activity, ReadingListsDirect, etc.

Portlets JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Some attempts at embedding U/I functionality from one service into another, e.g. RDN-Include. Standards to do this ‘properly’ now emerging from OASIS in form of WSRP. But, delivery of portlets ultimately adds significantly to number of services registered in JISC IESR.

Do I need a portal when I have… JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Email clients, browser with Google toolbar, EndNote, ReferenceManager, FeedReader, etc. bring portal functionality to the desktop and potentially bypass the need for server-based portals (but not the need for open standards).

Vocabulary issues JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries Semantic Web… doesn’t get mentioned much in the context of the JISC IE? But development and management of ‘ontologies’ increasingly important.

Danger of mismatch between vision… JISC-funded content providers institutional content providers external content providers brokersaggregatorscataloguesindexes institutional portals subject portals learning management systems media-specific portals end-user desktop/browser presentation fusion provision OpenURL resolvers shared infrastructure authentication/authorisation (Athens) JISC IE service registry institutional preferences services terminology services user preferences services resolvers metadata schema registries What the architecture says…

end-user desktop/browser …what the end-user sees :-( …and reality!

Summary Web services - SOAP, UDDI, WSDL, WSRP, … IMS digital repositories spec – IEEE LOM, OAI-PMH 2.0, OpenURL 1.0, SRW institutional activities – ePrints, Learning Object Repositories, DSpace, FAIR, uPortal Semantic Web - ontologies eScience and GRID ??
