REF 2014 preparations Lots of hard work by academic and professional services continues Seeking to enhance our reputational standing, both as University and for each subject area Decisions on inclusion of individuals & overall quality strategy being made during June Not a “one-size-fits-all” threshold – aim for best possible result for each academic unit of assessment More selective threshold than for RAE likely in most units Academic and professional services support appreciated as submission finalised in coming months Further info: www.sussex.ac.uk/ref/ Open Staff Forum June 2013

People: senior governance development New Chair of Council – Chris Brodie Thanks to Simon Fanshawe stepping down after 8 years Will be appointing five new independent members of Council – normal part of three-yearly cycle, but opportunity to attract new governance talent & skills Open Staff Forum June 2013

People: senior staffing developments Appointing new Head of School for Global Studies, following Richard Black’s appointment as Pro-Director at SOAS Director of IT Services – Iain Stinson leaving at end of June – will have interim director in place, pending replacement Range of new professorial appointments (see next slide) including first Andrew and Virginia Rudd Chair in Psychology – leading the new adoption research centre Bronze Athena SWAN accreditation achieved European Commission: HR Excellence in Research Award Open Staff Forum June 2013

Investment in new scholarships – supporting high-quality students (1) Undergraduate: First Generation Scholarships for 2012 – important to get this right in new fee environment Very effective – over 920 scholars receiving the £5k+ support. Another 340 first in family into higher education Latest WP numbers – over 23% in 2012, up from 21% in 2011 Home/EU offers for 2013 slightly down (-4.8%). Total application and offers still above 2010 levels. Important conversion work to reach targets Overseas applications up by 7% and offers up by 12% Open Staff Forum June 2013

Investment in new scholarships – supporting high-quality students (2) PGT scholarships: Sussex Graduate Scholarships – sector-leading. £3k for firsts, £2k for 2:1s, for 2013 entry, unlimited numbers Chancellor’s Masters Scholarships - £3k for firsts, competitive application from any other HEI. Total PGT applications nearly 12,500 (under 8,000 in 2010). Offers up by 8% for overseas PGR scholarships: Over 100 PhD scholarships on offer Home/EU applications holding steady – overseas doubled Open Staff Forum June 2013

Guardian 2014 – impact of 2011 graduate employment Guardian league table fall (as with others) due to: 2011 employment data – one-year drop 2012 NSS scores for assessment and feedback Action already taken on careers, and on structure of academic year Have seen improvement in 2012 employment data Improvement in feedback – eg 18 to 12 working days Expect recovery – but key is excellent student experience Open Staff Forum June 2013

Developing services: external partners update External partners for facilities management and catering to help us to grow and deliver even higher quality services Latest developments: assurances given to transferring staff in relation to pensions, terms and conditions and access to Sussex facilities Summer 2013: preferred suppliers announced & TUPE consultation September 2013 transfer for catering and October 2013 for facilities management Open Staff Forum June 2013

Technology developments Finance system – continuing to enhance New Human Resources & payroll system – in place for 2014 to support better recruitment and mgt reporting New IT investments to deliver improvements in the student experience – eg: E-submission and feedback – pilot for first years from Jan 2014 Better online signposting of information and advice Enhanced PC provision for PG research students Improved lecture recording across lecture theatres New academic year structure – review during 2013-14 Commitment to online learning and distance learning Open Staff Forum June 2013
