Ocean Water 1983 the world say a dramatic change in its climate California and south America had severe flooding While Australia and Indonesia had terrible droughts Large number of marine life and birds were dying off the coast of South America Whales, dolphins and seals disappeared from their usual feeding grounds
3
Christ Child All this was the result of change of wind patterns and ocean currents Peruvian fisherman named it el Nino
4
El nino Peru and Ecuador are highly productive fishing areas and it has nutrient rich waters The phenomenon is caused by pacific tradewinds that move cold, dense water to the coastal area, where it sinks and displaces less dense water to the surface
5
The Effect Warm water cause the death of cold water organisms that were the base of the food chain In some cases decaying was so bad, water was filled with hydrogen sulfide Occurred in 1953, 1957-1958, 1965, 1972-1973, 1976-1977. 1982-1983, 1990-1991
6
The Mystery Southern Ocean Oscillation- atmospheric pressure on one side of pacific increases while the pressure on the opposite side decreases, then switches Lessens by midsummer Slight warming in november, december
7
Predicting Not quite accurate Reminds us of the close interrelationship between marine and terrestrial ecosystems
