2 Learning Objectives Provide information relating to airports at the various destinations within the continent. o Describe weather patterns existing at the various destinations within the continent. o Discuss transportation available at the various destinations within the continent. o Describe the popular tourist attractions and places at the various destinations within the continent. o Evaluate the lodging options available at the various destinations within the continent. o Compile a personalised itinerary of the tourist destinations. o Justify factors that motivate visitors to visit the destinations across the continent. o Analyse the possible misgivings concerning destinations across the continent. o Apply sales strategies to sell destinations within the continent.

3 1) Introduction What comes to mind when you think about New York? Shopping, Great Museums, Night Life. New York – just off the Atlantic Ocean, between New England and the Mid Atlantic States. Americans most populated city. New York– Manhattan (business and tourists), New York City, Albany (Capital of New York)

4 1) Introduction New Jersey – famous for its beaches. Best Known city is Atlantic city – famous beaches and gambling.

5 2) Airports La Guardia (LGA) – 8 Miles down Manhattan. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) Newark Liberty International (EWR) in nearby New Jersey. Smaller Airports – Rochester's (ROC) North of New York, Buffalo Niagara (BUF) serves the west and Ontario.

6 2) Other modes of transport available Cabs and Limousines – favoured means of transport – but there are expensive., especially in Newark. Rail- links Newark and JFK. Manhattan Penn Station. Buses and minibuses provide transfers from all 3 airports Car rental options Because of traffic and distance JFK is not the best choice – but it receives most of the flights.

7 2) Other modes of transport available City traffic is intense and parking fees are sky high! New York City is a major cruise port – ships leaving to and from Canada, New England, Europe etc. New York State and New Jersey – have well developed highway systems – but there are many tolls. The train and bus systems – popular with commuters - extensive and convenient.

9 2) Other modes of transport available Popular shot cruise- trip up Hudson River. The best way to get around New York City- taxi, they are fast and relatively inexpensive. Subways are relatively safe. New York is a very walkable city. Visitors to New York can get around by tour. Motorcoach tours – excellent. Famous Circle Line Tour- Manhattan Ferry Rides – Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Staten Island – inexpensive.

10 3) Weather Patterns Summers are hot – sudden thunder showers. Winters are cold- rain and cold storms Late Spring and Fall are pleasant. Humidity can be a factor. New York City – tends to be warmer Precipitation can wreck havoc in the city – causing traffic jams, making taxis impossible to find.

11 3) Weather Patterns Tourist patterns – peak in summer for upstate New York and New Jersey, drops in winter. Atlantic City is packed in the weekends New York City – has no off season.

14 4.1) New York City Astonishing rich in attractions. These are the most popular and visited attractions: Page 57 The Statue of Liberty- most famous statue in the world. The Empire State Building – best views of Manhattan. The United Nations – graceful structure and important world forum.

16 4.1) New York City Rockefeller Centre – designed in 1930`s. famous ice rink, The NBC studio tour, Radio city music hall. Superb Museums – Metropolitan Museum of Art etc Well known neighbourhoods – Chinatown, Little Italy, South Street Seaport, Soho, Time square, Central Park.

18 4.1) New York City Ground Zero – where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre were destroyed by terrorist – has become a memorial site. Abundant nightlife opportunities – Broadway plays and musicals, major sporting events.

20 4.2) New York State Rest of New York is equally as interesting. Popular with leisure tourists. Hudson River West Point Hyde Park Long Island The Catskills Lake District

22 4.3) Atlantic City The street names of Atlantic City was inspired by the Monopoly board game. On the Boardwalk – long stretch of hotels, casino`s, restaurants, shopping centres and nightspots. Beaches are impressive and convention centres are vast. – but beyond this there is not much else to see. Those who have been to Las Vegas – maybe disappointed in Atlantic City.

26 4.3) Atlantic City Jersey Shore – broad beaches, popular night clubs and family entertainment. Wildwood – beat known town – alto of amusement areas and lively after dark. Asbury Park – well known place, where many rock performers become famous. Cape May – collection of well preserved Victorian Buildings.

28 4.3) Atlantic City Camden – impressive aquarium Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area –camping, hiking and out door activities

29 5) Possible Itineraries New York City – is a 5-7 day experience- however cities high cost can make such a stay expensive. To see New York's principal highlights – 3-4 days. Atlantic city -2 days. Motoring tour-could take a week. – Niagara Falls, Lake Champlain, Finger Lakes and Lake George.

30 6) Lodging Options Visitors will pay twice as much in New York City than any other state in USA. However, good barging weekend packages are often available. Rooms tend to be small. Most safe, convenient and popular lodging hotels – south and east Central Park. Hotels in Time Square are plentiful – new and old properties have been built.

31 6) Lodging Options Wall Street – stock exchange, headquarters, tourist attractions – however few lodging facilities. Atlantic City is a bargain. There are glitzy properties along Boardwalk – these can be pricy, nut there are special packages available. Accommodation across the rest of New Jersey and New York are reasonable – hotels, motels, bed and breakfast`s and camping facilities.

35 9) Sales Strategies UPSELLING- Hotels in New York City and Atlantic City –attractive strategy. Because – budget properties provoke complaints. Outside these cities – car rental, bus or train appropriate services. New York City – offer CROSS SELLING opportunities – airport transfer via limousine very popular.

36 9) Sales Strategies Theatre tickets, city tours and boat cruises can be booked in advanced. Business travellers may want to extend their trips for leisure. Ski packages to upstate resorts are popular as well.
