What is the Care Value Base?
All care work is about improving a client’s quality of life by meeting their PIES needs. Care workers do this by empowering their clients (by giving them the ability to do something for themselves). Care workers follow a set of 7 principles to help them give the standard of care client’s need. This is known as the Care Value Base.

What are the 7 values? 1.Promoting Anti-discriminatory practice 2.Maintaining Confidentiality of information 7.Providing Individualised care 3.Promoting and Supporting Individuals rights Clients empower Their clients by 6.Promoting effective Communication And relationships 4.Acknowledging Individuals’ Personal beliefs And identity 5.Protecting individuals From abuse

What do we do now? Over the next few lessons you will be expected to make notes on the 7 values of the Care Value Base (textbook pages 68 – 76). Remember: Do NOT just make notes out the book. You will need to give your own opinion of the values and how you think they help provide a better standard of care. You will need to include examples of how each of the 7 values are used by YOUR care worker.

1.Promoting anti-discriminatory practice
Care workers must be seen to treat all clients in the same way no matter what differences there are. Task: To make notes on the 4 main types of discrimination and explain how they can affect the care given to clients

2.Maintaining confidentiality of information
It is vital to successful care giving to keep information provided by the client confidential. However there may be times that this information would need to be shared. Task: To make notes on the reasons for and against keeping information confidential.

3.Promoting and supporting individuals’ rights
Everyone has the right to their beliefs and ideas but they must be responsible for not damaging the quality of other people’s lives. Task: To make notes on why both care workers and clients are responsible for not damaging other people’s quality of life.
