Phase One: EXPANSION, 1790-1828

Society An age of contrasts – High fashion, as evidenced by the Prince Regent – Brutality of execution and blood sports, such as ratting – http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ngPXdBxuwdc follow this link for an idea of the contrasts between the extremes of society. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ngPXdBxuwdc An age of revolution – The American revolution (1775-1783) – The French Revolution (1789-1799) Military Law – Before the police, the army controlled the population.

Schools Reflect society – Very little control – Chaos. Boys organised own recreational activities – Relieve boredom Masters not interested in activities – Strict discipline in classroom. Boys do whatever activities they want – Poaching, fighting, mob games etc

The games in Phase 1 were organised by the boys and ranged from : The violence of mob football To the relative sedateness of cricket From illegal poaching to organised hare and hounds from casual boating to rackets in the Quad. Hare and hounds An adaptation of fox hunting, where one boy runs away from a chasing pack, leaving a trail f paper as a ‘scent’ for them to follow.

Expansion Severe discipline from the Masters, lead to resentment from the boys, and a lot of hooligan behaviour. Lots of boys coming from all over the country. They all had different customs and traditions. This created a melting pot of games and ideas Each school developed its own versions of similar games – Eton Wall game and Charterhouse Cloisters, were birthplaces of mob style football games. Follow these links for more information on these. http://www.isfa.org.uk/about/news. php?go=fullnews&id=36 http://www.isfa.org.uk/about/news. php?go=fullnews&id=36 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eton_w all_game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eton_w all_game

Institutionalised Popular Recreation The popular recreation activities of the previous ages are now being institutionalised into schools. Activities range from childish hoops and quoits to barbaric mob football and bare knuckle boxing. Cricket already had rules, and was adopted by most schools.
