4 How and When 1917 - R.I. President Arch Clump proposed the creation of an endowment fund which we now know as - “The Rotary Foundation” First contribution $26.50 from RC Kansas City 1928 - First trustee appointed. Formally named TRF 1930 - First grant awarded - $500 to International Society for Crippled children 1947 - Death of Paul Harris. Fund received more than $1 million in his memory. Used to fund first Foundation programme for 18 Ambassadorial Scholars

5 History - moving on 1957 - First Paul Harris Recognition 1965 - Matching Grants and Group Study Exchange (GSE) begins 1978 - 3H (Health, Hunger & Humanity) programme created. $100,000 to the Philippines for Polio immunisation 1985 - PolioPlus programme launched to eradicate Polio by the Centenary of Rotary in 2005 1993 - 500 millionth child immunised 1994 - Western Hemisphere declared Polio free

6 History - moving on 1990 - Foundation contributors reaches 1,000,000 and Permanent Fund created. “Interest Only” to be used to supplement programmes 1999 - 10,000 th Matching Grant awarded 2003 - Additional SUCCESSFUL Challenge to raise another $4 million for PolioPlus 2006 - SUCCESS ?? So very close – just 4 Endemic Countries left !

8 The Mission “The Mission of the Rotary Foundation is to support the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian educational and cultural support programmes” or

10 The Rotary Foundation -TRF The Only Charity in the World that - ASKS YOU FOR MONEY INCREASES THAT BY INVESTMENTS THEN ASKS YOU HOW TO SPEND THE FUNDS

11 The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Is Rotary’s only Charity and is funded by donations from clubs, Rotarians and individuals, either during their lifetime or by bequests

12 How does TRF work? Relies on the enthusiastic support of Rotarians voluntarily giving of their time and money

13 Who does TRF belong to? Every Rotarian whether he or she has made a contribution or not

14 WHO SPENDS IT? You do! Each district currently receives back 50 % of the giving which they made 3 years ago (Called the DDF funds)

15 Why DDF currently 50% ? The other 50% (The World Fund) is to pay for some other district programmes costs such as:- GSE team The “other” half of a “Matched” Grant & District Simplified grants - etc

16 DDF ?  D istrict D esignated F und REMEMBER  There is no WE and there is no THEY  It is US who say WHAT we spend and HOW we spend it

17 So What does DDF DO? It allows us all to undertake bigger and well controlled projects to meet the NEEDS of those we care to SERVE It has allowed, and continues to allow us to be personally involved in building a Better World working with clubs Internationally

18 The Rotary Foundation You share in the spending decision making:  Your contributions are used for programmes THREE years after they were received by the Rotary Foundation  Three year cycle allows the Foundation to invest your contribution to pay for all administration, programme operations, and fund development costs  Three year cycle gives Districts time for planning and selection for the District’s choice of programme awards

25 Why a Permanent Fund?  Investment in perpetuity  Fund to provide Annual Income to fund new and expanded programmes  Portion of investment to support the Foundation programmes

26 YOUR WAYS OF FUNDING  Direct to Foundation – allowing a Gift Aid uplift  As a Benefactor – ‘Will’ contribution  Major Donor – special contribution to either fund  Purchase of Paul Harris Award – 1000US$  Matched Grant contribution

29 Anyone who informs the Foundation in writing that they have made provision in their will or estate naming the Foundation’s Permanent fund as a beneficiary.

30 Anyone who Bequests to The Foundation a sum of £7,000 or more in their estate

31 The Future - A continuation of -  Group Study Exchange  Rotary Volunteers  Health Hunger and Humanity Grants  District Simplified Grant Scheme - approx - 10% of your Contributions spent in your locality or internationally  Rotary Peace Scholarships  Ambassadorial Scholarships etc,etc,etc

36 The Rotary Foundation There is no other charity which:  Asks YOU for money  Increases YOUR donation by investment  Deducts no administration fees AND THEN  Asks how YOU want to spend the money!
