How can we save our rainforests?
2
Did you know that in the 4 seconds it took you to read this sentence a football pitch patch of rainforest has been destroyed..
4
Why are they being destroyed ?
5
People are cutting down the rainforests in pursuit of three major resources…
6
1. Land for crops
7
2. Lumber for paper and other wood products
8
3. Land for livestock pastures
9
In the current economy, people obviously have a need for all of these resources
10
But almost all experts agree that, over time, we will suffer much more from the destruction of the rainforests than we will benefit
11
Why do scientists say it is vital that rainforests continue to exist?
12
40% of the world’s oxygen is produced in rainforests
13
Scientists estimate more than half the world’s animal and plant population live in rainforests
14
About ¼ of all the medicines we use come from rainforest plants
15
More than 1,400 varieties of tropical plants are thought to be potential cures for cancers such as AID’s and other diseases
16
So who is here to help…?
17
AVEAVE HEHE MAZONMAZON AINFORESTAINFOREST RGANISATIONSRGANISATIONS
18
STARO creates different types of projects that help us to save rainforests…
19
The goals of these projects are…
20
1. To create sustainable alternatives to destructive agriculture
21
2. To prevent rural exodus ( migratory patterns of peoples from rural areas into urban areas)
22
3. To recreate the model to all the many rural settlements that request it
23
4. To create a new income source for the forest dwellers
24
A recent project involves buying stingless bees for local people to make honey, that they can sell…
25
This project is called BUY THE BEES. Find out how you can get involved at staro.org
26
What can we do to help?
27
Some steps for saving rainforests can be abbreviated as TREES:
28
TREESTREES each others about the importance of the environment and how they can help save rainforests estore damaged ecosystems by planting trees on land where forests have been cut down ncourage people to live in a way that doesn’t hurt the environment stablish parks to protect rainforest and wildlife upport companies that operate in ways that minimize damage to the environment
29
What can you do?
30
Think before you bite … Ask where your food has come from. Is it rainforest friendly ?
31
Traveling.. Petrol is made from oil and comes from below the ground, this can cause the destruction of rainforests. Try to walk or cycle to work or school instead of driving
32
Recycling… Did you know that 80% of household waste is actually recyclable ? Clothes, shoes, old books, phones, paper, toys and more can all help rainforests around the world if recycled
33
Will you be one to do something about it…?
34
Will you be one to make a difference …?
36
Thank you
