Essential Questions How do I solve an absolute value inequality?

Absolute Value Inequalities are written as two compound inequalities and solved as INTERSECTIONS or as UNIONS. If and, then (intersection) If and, then OR (union) THESE RULES ALSO APPLY FOR ≤ AND ≥.

If the absolute value is less than a number or expression The inequality is an INTERSECTION (and). BOTH parts must be true at the same time. The variable will fall BETWEEN two values if there is a solution. (See example 2 on p. 32 of the handout.) greater than a number or expression The inequality is a UNION (or). Either part may be true for inequality to be true. The solution will consist of all the possibilities for EITHER inequality. (See example 1 on p. 32 of the handout.)
