Acids, Bases, and pH Part 2

Properties of Acids Acids: –Taste Sour (never use taste to test the presence of an acid) –Are Electrolytes –Are Corrosive Some react strongly to with certain metals, seeming to eat away the metals producing hydrogen gas –Example: HCl and Aluminum Foil –React with certain compounds, called indicators, to produce predictable changes in color Generally changes red in the presence of an acid

Properties of Bases Bases: –Feel Slippery –Are Electrolytes –Are Corrosive Contact with the skin can produce severe burns –Taste Bitter (Never use taste to test for the presence of a base) –React with indicators to produce predictable changes in color Generally changes blue in the presence of a base

What does it mean to be a strong or weak acid or base? As we just watched when acids or bases are put in water they dissociate into its ionic parts The strength of the acid or base is determined by how completely the acid or base is pulled apart (dissociates)

Acids Strong Acid – completely ionize in solution Example: HCl (g)+H 2 O(l)  H 3 O + (aq)+ Cl - (aq) Weak Acid – Partially ionize in solution Example: CH 3 COOH(l) + H 2 O(l)  H 3 O + (aq) + CH 3 COO - (aq)

Bases Strong Base- Completely dissociates in solution Example: NaOH (aq)+ H 2 O(l)  Na + (aq)+ OH - (aq) Weak Base- Partially dissociates in solution Example: NH 3 (aq) + H 2 O(l)  NH 4 + (aq) + OH - (aq)
