pH and Buffers I. pH: Measure of how acidic or basic a substance is. A.Acid: any substance that forms hydrogen ions in water (H+) B.Base: any substance that forms hydroxide ions in water (OH-) C.pH scale is 0-14. The lower the number, the more acidic it is, the higher the number the more basic it is. A pH of 7 is neutral (neither basic nor acidic) II. pH Buffers-resist pH change A. Biological systems have naturally occurring buffers.
