3. The Learning Immersion and Talent Development Magnet programs allow student learning to be accelerated through an intense curriculum focused on the academic strengths of each child. Talent Development students in grades 3 – 5 are exposed to a full day of rigorous, academically challenging instruction.

4. Magnet Objectives:  To create scholarly, thoughtful classrooms by promoting scholarly behavior and language.

5. Scholars…  are always ready to participate.  are hungry for new information.  are always setting goals to achieve.  are always exercising their brains.

6. Scholars…  look at things from multiple points of view.  take good notes and use multiple and varied resources.  are always asking questions and pondering information.

7. Scholarly language includes such phrases as: I agree with… I disagree with… Please clarify what you mean by… I respect your opinion, but… I’d like to add to…

8.  To provide learning experiences organized around big ideas, concepts/themes, and generalizations with an emphasis on thinking and reasoning skills. Magnet students receive instruction in rich content that extends the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

9. William and Mary Curriculum Units The integrated language arts curriculum units are designed to respond to gifted learners’ characteristics of precocity, intensity, and complexity through three dimensions of advanced content:  higher level processes  product development  interdisciplinary concepts, issues, and themes (http://cfge.wm.edu/Documents/curriculum_materials.html)

10. CHANGE Generalizations about change: Change relates to time. Change can be natural or manmade. Change can be orderly or random. Change is everywhere.

Navigators Novel study guides that encourage advanced readers to: develop their skills through structured questions and activities that highlight real world connections contained within the books. develop their own vocabulary and writing skills by exploring and emulating the language and style used by different authors. develop their research skills. http://cfge.wm.edu/curriculum.htm

12.  To provide learning experiences that require rigor, novelty, depth and complexity of thought. -Magnet students are encouraged to engage in self-directed learning and practice insightful questioning. -Instructional pace is adjusted according to the needs of the gifted learners.

13. -Magnet students learn to use higher level questioning strategies that are based on Marzano’s and Bloom’s Levels of Thinking. “If there were intelligent life on other planets, what would you tell them about Earth?”

14. -Magnet students participate in Paideia Seminars, Junior Great Books and TouchPebbles discussions.  Students practice scholarly language.  Students gain multiple perspectives and practice complex thinking.  Students become active listeners and participants.

15.  To create problem- centered learning experiences - Magnet students address and solve challenging levels of real world problems. -Magnet students are given ample opportunities to practice structured leadership and teamwork.

16. -Magnet students are able to explain their reasoning and provide support for their answers when searching for solutions to real world problems. “Investigate the effects of a recent and especially destructive natural disaster. “ -Both critical problem solving and creative problem solving activities are incorporated. “ You have to baby sit 3 children in the neighborhood for 5 hours. The ages range from 3 months to 6 years.”

17. Magnet students learn to conduct research using a variety of resources, both primary and secondary.

19. -Magnet students learn problem-solving, deductive thinking and algebraic reasoning skills using: Math Investigations The Problem Solver Hands-On Equations

20. Magnet students have the opportunity to explore strength-based instruction based on the Multiple Intelligences.

21. -Magnet students research and study gifted leaders, creative people, and learn about creative processes. -Magnet students pursue their interests through curriculum that is focused on process, content, and product.

22. -Magnet Schools strive to build a scholarly staff by: Encouraging gifted certification. Attending the Annual LI/TD Magnet Institute. Providing a full-time Talent Development resource teacher in each school who plans with both Learning Immersion and Talent Development teachers. Attending Magnet Articulation meetings.

23. Magnet Programs Strive to Develop Lifelong Thinkers Teaching is more than helping a group of students make it through one year of school. Good teachers prepare students for LIFE. Many of the problems and demands of adult life that await today’s students can be successfully handled and even solved if they know how to apply appropriate thinking. It takes modeling, hard work and lots of practice – by teachers AND students. Teachers have the unique opportunity to model effective thinking habits and to create daily opportunities for students to learn and practice effective thinking techniques.
