According to the Princeton Dictionary, the definition of the word destiny is- an event or course of events that will inevitably happen in the future. Q: Do you believe in destiny? What do you think yours is?

2 Our Next Unit…. Growth and Expansion: “Manifest Destiny”
Some believed that it was the United States’ destiny to expand across the North American Continent…. No Matter What! Conflict with… environment, Native Americans, Slavery, and War!

3 Moving West…. The first census- official count of population- revealed a population of 4 million with most living east of the Appalachian mountains. Within 30 years, population had grown to nearly 10 million with 2 million living west of the Appalachian’s! 1790: :

4 Westward Expansion! By Land…
The nation needed good roads for travel and for the shipment of goods. Turnpikes- toll roads “Corduroy Roads” National Road built in 1806 Wilderness Road (p. 316) *Helped develop TN!

5 By Water… River travel was far more comfortable But, Problems:
Hard to go against the current (most rivers ran N to S, not E to W) Barges were SLOW! So, Robert Fulton develops a Steamboat- Clermont NYC to Albany; 150 miles in 32 hours… used to take 4 days!

When new states were added in the newly acquired LA Territory, should slavery be allowed or prohibited? Should the people of a state be allowed to decide for themselves? In 1820, Missouri applied to become a new state…slavery or free? What about the rest of Louisiana?
