The Adolescent Physical Activity Recall Questionnaire (APARQ)

Background information on assessing physical activity and rationale for using APARQ

Australian context In May 2004, ACAORN Physical Activity Stream identified the need to develop a standardised approach to measuring physical activity that can be used nationally, but cater for state differences. The Physical Activity Stream recommended APARQ to be the preferred instrument for assessing physical activity among adolescents

Key dimensions of physical activity

Other things to consider… Place Where does the physical activity occur? In what environment? Social context Who is the physical activity usually done with? Individually, with friends, a team? Purpose What is the reason for participation? Enjoyment, improve fitness, lose weight, improve skills?

Key dimensions of a physical activity self-report instrument Type  OrganisedNon-organised  WorkTransportation  PE/School sport. Intensity  SedentaryLight  ModerateVigorous  Very vigorous

Key dimensions of a physical activity self-report instrument Frequency  How many times per week (including training & competition times for organised activities)? Duration  How long do you participate in this activity? (best for adolescents to report in minutes)

Key considerations for a physical activity self-report instrument Habitual activity Comprehensive detail Not excessive demands on students

How does APARQ measure up? Instrument Reliability (ICC) Validity (value & measure) Dimensions measured Sensitivity to change Burden Cost to researcher APARQ (Booth, Okely, Chey, Bauman, 2002) 0.30-0.860.14-0.39 (Fitness) Type Frequency Intensity Duration High30 mins to complete High level of prompting & instruction Low printing, High entering & cleaning

Strengths of APARQ Organised vs. Non-organised Seasonal differences (Winter & Summer school terms) In-school and out-of-school Frequency, Intensity, Time (duration), and Type

Outcome measures from APARQ Time spent in physical activity stratified by dimension Proportion meeting physical activity recommendations Energy expenditure on one dimension Total energy expenditure

Uses of APARQ data Epidemiology Policy makers School staff Local government
