doc.: IEEE 802.11-14/0618r2 Submission Introduction Contribution [1] proposed an extension of 11ai CAG Number IE to other advertisement protocols so that it can be used as an 11aq Service Update Indicator. There were a few drawbacks in design proposed in [1]: –Option 1: supports only one protocol per IE and needs multiple IEs for multiple advertisement protocols. –Option 2: 1) carries extra overhead constantly in order to support multiple protocols in one IE; 2) Protocol ID Bit Mask field has limited space for future extensions; 3) Scope field isn’t protocol-specific. In this contribution, we propose some possible enhancements. [1]. 11-14-0325-00-00aq-service-update-indicator May 2014

doc.: IEEE 802.11-14/0618r2 Submission Proposed Option 3 Extending the Option 1 design in [1] by allowing multiple tuples of Advertisement Protocol ID, Scope, and CAG Version fields. Each field is as currently defined. o Pro: 1) allow multiple protocols in one IE; 2) both the CAG Version and the Scope fields are protocol-specific. o Con: not backward compatible with 11ai Draft 2.0. doc.: IEEE 802.11-14/0618r2 Submission Proposed Option 4 Further condense Advertisement Protocol ID field and Scope field into 5-bit Partial Advertisement Protocol ID field (carrying 5 LSBs of Advertisement Protocol ID) and 3-bit Scope field and combine them into 1-octet. o Pro: If Option 3 can’t be incorporated in 802.11ai Amendment in time, Option 4 is still backward compatible with 802.11ai Amendment, as only 0-2 are defined as Scope values in 11ai and the Advertisement Protocol ID for ANQP is zero. o Con: Limiting the number of Advertisement Protocol IDs to 32 and limiting the number of Scope values to 8.
