1 you Bringing humanitarian projects to a section near you IEEE Region 7, Canada. http://hic.ieee.ca/ Advancing Technology for Humanity Reflects IEEE's core purpose, or mission, which is "to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity." (IEEE has ) increased efforts to be "universally recognized for the contributions of technology and of technical professionals in improving global conditions." Pedro Ray, IEEE President The Institute, March 8 th, 2010 IEEE Core Values Service to humanity Global focus Trust and respect Growth and nurturing of the profession Collaboration and community building Professionalism Intellectual activity Peer-reviewed Humanitarian Technology Challenge (HTC) Partnership between United Nations Foundation and IEEE. Focused on three challenges to bring a more systematic approach to applying technology to solve world problems: Reliable Electricity Data Connectivity of Rural District Health Offices. Now: R-7 standing committee, and SIGHT, supporting IEEE members participating in Humanitarian initiatives. Why does the IEEE Region-7 HIC exists ? To respond to the growing need, voiced by members, to address world problems: oHIC leading or participating in IEEE humanitarian initiatives oHIC sharing knowledge about how to work with different IEEE programs, funding sources To enhance sense of belonging and pride in being members: oBooths, presentations at R-7 major events (EPEC, CCECE, AGMs, etc) oSupporting membership development, helping in member retention To provide members opportunity to use professional skills outside current job: oProviding opportunity to programs like Community Service Learning for university students oEnabling support of industry Corporate Social Responsibility programs To provide to R7 sections continuity needed by humanitarian projects: oPilot projects with a few R-7 Sections, progress being shared with R-7 section chairs oParticipation in section events (Ottawa GM, Atlantic Canada Engineering week, etc) To provide opportunity to members “to do well while doing good” o Participating in IEEE humanitarian projects (CSI, HTC-Reliable-Electricity, HTC-Data-Connectivity, ComSoc’s ICC 2012 in Ottawa, SIGHT, GHTC2011, GHTC 2012, GHTC 2013, etc) Make it happen Helping individuals get started at the section level. Will maintain handful of key enablers to support initiatives (templates, tutorials, how-to guides for funding, etc.) Using clearinghouse model, connecting volunteers with IEEE humanitarian projects Three planned pilot projects: Northern Canada section (disaster response), Ottawa section (ICT student design competition participation), third section TBD (demo of solar design at EPEC) www.engineeringforchange.org www.ieeechangetheworld.org Humanitarian Design Student humanitarian design competition for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in college or university: Instrumental to define Open Source licensing for IEEE humanitarian projects 2010-2011 competition aimed at improving WECARE Solar Suitcase™ Students were asked to improve, to extend or to innovate WECARE’s system. Three top teams invited to CCECE 2011: 1st prize: Sustainable Solar team, Villanova University 2nd prize: Boondocks team, University of Waterloo 3rd prize: Light Followers team, University of Waterloo After a pause, we held student paper competition at CCECE 2013 Organization of Student paper competition at CCECE now key annual event Major design project 2013-2014: Open Source Avalanche Rescue Imaging System (OS-ARIS). http://hic.ieee.ca/ In 2012: First IEEE Humanitarian Communication Applications workshop - Collocated with ComSoc ICC2012 in Ottawa Format interspersed presentations from experts with roundtable discussions, with focused discussion on the business model used for the HTC-Data-Connectivity project in Peru: Unlicensed spectrum and Carrier WiFi, Cognitive Radio Networks for Developing Regions Communication needs in humanitarian context Experiences from being in the field International Development & Technology The Peru experience – an IEEE HTC solution Ottawa test bed for the IEEE HTC Data Connectivity Business model for telemedicine in Peru In 2014: planning to host Region 7 Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - Montreal Desire is to complement Region 6 GHTC Desire is to work with east-coast sections and regions, to bring a humanitarian conference closer to IEEE members in those areas Format will probably include prototyping sessions, roundtable discussions and workshops Goal is to rally and engage R7 sections in Humanitarian projects, and to formalize their participation in the SIGH program. Support member and membership Need of a systematic approach Desire to demonstrate expertise & relevance of IEEE to positively impact humanity Use HIC framework to assist sections when doing humanitarian initiatives sites.ieee.org/societies/category/ieee-humanitarian-technology-challenge/ www.ieee.org/special_interest_group_on_humanitarian_technnology.html
