Simile Ex. The puppy was as cute as a button. Simile – Using like or as to compare 2 unlike things.

Hyperbole Ex. He is fatter than an ox. Hyperbole – exaggerating to show strong feeling.

Alliteration Ex. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Alliteration – the repetition of the first consonant sound in words.

Metaphor Ex. Her room is a pigsty. Metaphor – comparing two things without using like or as.

Personification Ex: The flowers smiled at me. Giving human traits to objects or ideas

Onomatopoeia Ex: Woof, Meow, bang, boom Words that represent the actual sound of something

Idioms Ex: It is raining cats and dogs outside. Expressions that don’t mean what they say.

Understatement Ex: This won’t hurt a bit. Expressions that have less strength than expected
