Definition Data collection is the systematic documentation of specific information about a student’s academic or behavioral performance. Data collection has two critical components: information gathering and decision making. The more structured and systematic the process, the more valid the information.

How To Get Started Select which behavior(s) and intervention(s) you want to track for effectiveness. Define target behaviors in measurable terms and utilize only those interventions that can be delivered with fidelity. Choose a tool to collect your data. Determine when to collect data. Implement the data collection system. Summarize and graph data. Utilize data to make decisions about intervention effectiveness.

Selecting the Behaviors FBA targeted behaviors IEP Social/Emotional Goals Behavior that is identified as a pre-cursor to more explosive behaviors. Behavior that is identified as a reaction to a know antecedent. Behavior(s) that occur with frequency vs. intermittently.

Determining the Intervention(s) Positive Behavioral Supports vs. Aversive Teaching replacement behaviors. Looking at student strengths and building on those. Establishing yourself as an ally for the student. Individual student focused in addition to behavioral supports that occur in the classroom and school.
