1 Space: The Big Picture Chap 1; Lesson 1.1
T.O.C: Space in Perspective

2 Arrangement of (known) Universe
Earth (8,000 miles in diameter) Solar system(w.w)- the Sun (a star) and all the planets that orbit around it Milky Way Galaxy (the galaxy we live in) Galaxy(w.w)- large system of stars & space objects held together by mutual gravitation (separate from other galaxies due to lots of space in between) Universe(w.w)- all of space/cosmos and everything in it.

3 Objects in Space Orbit! Orbit(w.w)- path one object takes around another. Caused by the influence of gravity. Can you name some space objects that orbit something? Moon orbits Earth Earth/planets orbit the Sun Space telescopes/satellites also orbit

4 The Sky Seems to Turn as Earth Rotates
It doesn’t though. Earth is just moving. Apparent mvmt led early astronomers to believe Earth was the center of the universe Part of view of night sky is blocked by Earth The moon is our closest neighbor Constellations/stars change position in sky as Earth rotates Constellation(w.w)- various groupings of stars that have been given names/stories & appear to make shapes. Stars are always moving, but we’re so far away we can’t tell. Polaris- located directly above N. pole (can tell Earth is rotating from here) Used by sailors/navigators/ppl to figure out location/direction Constellation Activity

5 1.1 Review Q’s 10 pts What is the arrangement of the universe? (in order). 4 pts Explain what the term “orbit” means & give an example. 2 pts What is a constellation? 2 pts What is the name of our galaxy? 2 pts
