What is Information Technology? Information technology (IT) is the application of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data, often in the context of a business or other enterprise https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology
3
What does this have to do with education? Research studies have shown that teachers with traditional pedagogical beliefs are more likely to use didactic teaching (Niederhauser, Salem & Fields, 1999; Stofflett & Stoddart, 1994). However, it has since been observed that “computers promot(ed) dialogues in the classroom and encouraged ‘students to explore and research new ideas and understand the ideas for themselves’ (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-8535.2007.00774.x/full)http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-8535.2007.00774.x/full Computers being used as learning tools have also been viewed “as empowering the learners by providing ‘self-paced learning’, ‘learning how to learn’ and ‘ideas construction and presentation’” (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-8535.2007.00774.x/full)http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-8535.2007.00774.x/full

What about “the old way” of learning? The traditional lecture-based lesson, while effective to a point, does not stimulate every type of learner. (http://www.ehow.com/list_6364456_advantages-information- technology-education.html)http://www.ehow.com/list_6364456_advantages-information- technology-education.html “Teachers usually have multiple goals to fulfil (sic), and using computers might compete with other equally or more important goals of teaching.” (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467- 8535.2007.00774.x/full)http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467- 8535.2007.00774.x/full “Helping students to pass examinations…has become the competing goal that might…prevent…teachers from using…computers.” (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467- 8535.2007.00774.x/full)http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467- 8535.2007.00774.x/full

Can it be done effectively? In order to use technology effectively, educators need to be trained in using technology and they need to develop a good understanding of it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_and_communication_technologies_in_educ ation)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_and_communication_technologies_in_educ ation Teachers must be trained in how to plan, create, and deliver instruction within a technological setting. It requires a different pedagogical approach. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_and_communication_technologies_in_educ ation)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_and_communication_technologies_in_educ ation By adding a dimension to their lessons, teachers have the opportunity to engage more students and lead a more involved, energetic class.
