1 St. Charles Borromeo  Location: Kettering, OH  Grades: Pre-K – 8  Students: ≈ 510  Staff: 2 non-certified, job share  Schedule: fixed and flexible Most classes are on a fixed schedule. There is some flex time in the morning, and throughout the day, for students to return books and take AR quizzes. One of the staff does have a teaching degree, but neither has formal library training.

2 Circulation Area The circulation area is immediately inside the door. It might be difficult for the library staff to monitor the shelving and open areas from this space.

3 Technology / Office Space Computers are used to access the catalog and for AR quizzes. Occasionally they are used for work/research when the lab is full. The library staff members prefer not to have the responsibility of monitoring students when they are online. The office space is created with dividers.

4 Story Time / Instructional Space Both the story time area and instructional space offer plenty of room. The space however is not very attractive/inviting.

5 Shelving – Fiction and Information There are not clear distinctions between fiction and non-fiction titles. Shelves are taller than is desirable for grade school use.

6 Shelving – Fiction, Information, and Videos An opportunity exists to make the shelf labeling clearer and more attractive. A person with disabilities would have difficulty accessing materials and navigating in this space.

7 Shelving – Picture Books / Mural Picture books are appropriately shelved, though they are not well labeled. The mural provides one attractive/bright spot in this otherwise unattractive library space.

8 Conclusions Based on access to materials, including computer use, I would not consider this a strong teaching library. The main purpose of this library appears to be for students to enjoy reading and access books for pleasure. Whether the library staff support teachers in the building was unclear.
