Teaching Sequence Before you start… Determine sequence for note introduction Where does your musical material (mainly) lie? In C? in F? in G? I often start with A & C’, then B-A-G, then move to low E Get the right hand in the action QUICKLY Other years I have started with B-A-G, then low E & D, the C’ & D’ After the first 5 notes, choices may vary (depending upon “discoveries” the students make

Integrate Recorder Include recorder in other areas of your music curriculum Singing Playing other instruments Listening Improvisation Try not to limit recorder pedagogy merely as a vehicle for teaching note reading!!

Pedagogical Considerations Proceed slowly – allow your students time to solidify skills Don’t make your first lesson too long Work to develop musical awareness & growth! Have a final music product in some form for each lesson

Introduction of New Notes 3 Steps to Remember: 1. Finger preparation (e.g., arm recorder) 2. Isolated practice (e.g., echo practice) 3. Practice in musical context (use as a means of expanding musical awareness & growth!!)
