Why Co-Teach? Increased access to the general curriculum More immediate and more accurate individualized instruction Increased positive attitudes toward school work More use of strategies that feature active learning, which leads to increased achievement Higher ratings of satisfaction, as co-teachers meet their own basic needs as well as the basic needs of their students Higher capacity to meet a variety of student needs

Five Basic Elements 1. At least one common goal 2. A shared belief system where each co-teacher is valued for their expertise 3. Parity between the co-teachers who both give and receive information or advice and learn each other’s skills 4. Leadership roles are distributed among the co- teaching team members 5. A cooperative procedure with face-to-face interaction, monitoring, communication, and individual accountability

Planning The District expects that you to plan with your co- teacher. If you do not have common planning, please talk to your Principal so arrangements can be made for sub- coverage.

Planning Continued Review the planning sheets to determine one or two that might work for your co-teaching team. Discuss with your table Record on the chart

Kicking Off the Year Spend time with your co-teacher to establish: - classroom procedures - classroom rules - a letter to parents and your class syllabus - how you will explain co-teaching to your students - planning expectations - roles when you have a substitute - note for sub folder explaining co-taught classes
