LOTF – Ch. 2 Character Chart “Paying attention to how the characters are already changing.”

Ralph  Thought of as a good leader, but...  Not a quick decision maker  Popular, but...  Not too bright  Uses Piggy indifferently  Wants to be friends with Jack  Poorly handles the first challenge to his leadership  “There is no beastie!”, (pgs. 36-37)  Uses Piggy disrespectfully  “If I say anything,’ cried Piggy, with bitter realism, ’you say shut up; but if Jack or Maurice or Simon – ‘“ (pg. 43)

Piggy  Lacks courage/self-confidence  Smart and caring  Sees Ralph as a friend, but...  Is hurt by Ralph’s disloyalty  Wants organization and structure  Fears Jack  Becomes more outspoken, especially in his support of the rules  “’Let him have the conch!,’ shouted Piggy.” (pg. 35)  Is characterized as an adult  “Then, with the martyred expression of a parent... “ (pg. 38)  Challenges Ralph’s treatment of him  “’If I say anything,’ cried Piggy, with bitter realism,’you say shut up; but if Jack or Maurice or Simon - ‘” (pg. 43)  Becomes visibly angry  “Piggy lost his temper...by now they were listening to his tirade” (pg. 45)

Jack  Competitive and aggressive  Thinks he should be chief  Bossy and domineering  Considers Ralph a rival, but...  Still thinks of Ralph as a friend  Verbally cruel to Piggy  Undermines (although unintentionally) Ralph’s leadership  “But if there was a snake, we’d hunt and kill it” (pg.36)  Openly challenges Ralph’s leadership  “’The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain,’ said Jack:” (pg. 42)  Openly threatens Piggy  “Jack turned fiercely. ‘You shut up!’” (pg. 42)

Simon  Weak (at least physically)  Courageous? (willing to climb the mountain, despite his “weakness”)  A “vivid boy” with black hair  Sticks up for Piggy (and in the face of Jack)  “We used his specs... He helped that way” (pg. 42)

Roger  “Slight furtive boy”  Keeps to himself with an “inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy”  mysterious, and possibly sneaky  Makes the suggestion for a vote  Knowledgeable (only one who knows how to make fire)  “’You make a bow and spin the arrow,’ said Roger” (pg. 42)

Sam and Eric  Good-natured and energetic  Identical twins  Smarter than expected  “Now the twins, with unsuspected intelligence. Came up the mountainside with armfuls of dried leaves” (pg. 40)  Beginning to lose their individual identity??  “The twins, Sam ‘n Eric, were the first to get a likely log...” (pg. 39)
