 Facts on Holocaust By: Nora Filbin

Facts about Holocaust  The Holocaust began in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. It ended in 1945 when Allied powers defeated the Nazis.  Once World War II began, the Nazis ordered all Jews to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothing so they could be easily targeted.  Jews were forced to live in specific areas of the city called ghettos after the beginning of World War ll. In the larger ghettos, up to 1,000 people a day were picked up and brought by train to concentration camps or death camps. Though Anne Frank hid in a Attic of an office.

Deaths  In prison camps, prisoners were forced to do hard physical labor. Torture and death within concentration camps were common and frequent.  11 million people were killed during the Holocaust (1.1 million children). 6 million of those victims were Jewish. Other groups targeted by the Nazis were Jehovah’s Witnesses, disabled people, and Gypsies.  Two-thirds of Jewish people living in Europe at the time of World War II were killed by Nazis.

How Anne Felt  “Jews were required to turn in their bicycles; Jews were forbidden to use streetcars; Jews were forbidden to ride in cars, even their own; Jews were required to do their shopping between 3 and 5 P.M.; Jews were required to frequent only Jewish-owned barbershops and beauty parlors; Jews were forbidden to be out on the streets between 8 P.M. and 6 A.M.; Jews were forbidden to go to theaters, movies or any other forms of entertainment; Jews were forbidden to use swimming pools, tennis courts, hockey fields or any other athletic fields; Jews were forbidden to go rowing; Jews were forbidden to take part in any athletic activity in public; Jews were forbidden to sit in their gardens or those of their friends after 8 P.M.; Jews were forbidden to visit Christians in their homes; Jews were required to attend Jewish schools, etc. You couldn’t do this and you couldn’t do that, but life went on.

Facts  The Holocaust lasted for 11 years.  Hitler was a Nazi.  The first ones to die in the Holocaust were disabled .  5,000 communities were wiped out during the Holocaust.  Holocaust is a Greek word for “death burnt”.
