Warm Up 8-12-2013 (WtK Words) 1.Memoir / autobiographical narrative: a literary genre, forming a subclass of autobiography– although the terms 'memoir' and 'autobiography' are almost an interchangeable record of events. Memoirs are structured differently from formal autobiographies (which tend to encompass the writer's entire life span), focusing rather on the development of his or her personality. The chronological scope of a memoir is more focused and flexible than the traditional arc of birth to old age as found in an autobiography. 2.Autobiography: is an account of the life of a person, written by its subject; usually an individuals whole life story from birth. 3.Primary source: A primary source is a document, speech, or other sort of evidence written, created during the time under study. Primary sources offer an inside view of a particular event. 4.Secondary source: A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources in them. Examples: text books & other books, encyclopedias, magazine articles 5.Anecdote: a short account of a particular incident or event of an interesting or amusing nature, often biographical. 6.Theme: A central idea, message, or lesson that is conveyed by a piece of literature. The message may be about life, society, or human nature. Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas and may be implied rather than stated explicitly; the lesson learned from a story
