Physical vs Chemical
2
Read pp. 11-14 in your textbook Define each of the following:
Density______________________ Ductility ______________________ Solubility _______________________ Malleability ______________________ Thermal Conductivity ______________ Physical property __________________ In your notebook, give three Physical Properties of your textbook using the list above
3
Physical Property A feature or characteristic of matter which can be observed without changing the identity of the matter color density Conductivity Thermal electrical smell malleability ductility taste Melting point solubility texture magnetism Boiling Point
4
Characteristic Property
A feature or characteristic of matter is specific to that substance and does not change with amount of substance What are some characteristic properties of WATER ? Density = 1 g/mL Melting point = 0oC Boiling point = 100oC
5
MAIN POINT – something NEW is being formed
Chemical Property Describes how a substance reacts with other substances flammability Reactions with acid 2nd ex Reactions with water Non - reactivity MAIN POINT – something NEW is being formed
6
Physical Change A change in the properties of matter without changing the actual identity of the matter. The physical appearance may change, but you still have the same substance as before Chemical properties do not change No energy is PRODUCED Usually can be reversed
7
Physical Change Examples of Physical Change:
Breaking or cutting something A change of state (melting, boiling, freezing, etc) Dissolving Making a mixture
8
Chemical Change A change that occurs when materials react or are broken into a different chemical. The physical appearance changes, and you have different substances than before BOTH physical and Chemical properties may change Energy may be Produces OR Absorbed Usually can NOT be reversed unless you make another chemical change
9
Chemical Change Burning Mixing with acid Cooking (baking)
Examples of Chemical Change: Burning Mixing with acid Cooking (baking) Rusting (corroding)
10
Chemical Change Bubbling Color change Temperature change (exo or endo)
EVIDENCE of Chemical Change: Bubbling Color change Temperature change (exo or endo) Produce sound or light Odor
