Intro to GPS – Exercise 1, Navigating The GPS guides you to a destination using a GOTO (GOTO means GOing TO a destination in a direct line). Now use the GOTO feature and the Navigation Page to travel to a waypoint. 1.Turn on the GPS outside and wait until the unit has locked onto satellites. 2.Press the PAGE Button and switch to the ‘MENU’ Page. 3.Press the UP or DOWN Button and highlight ‘WAYPOINTS’. 4.Press ENTER. The ‘WAYPOINTS’ Page appears (see graphic). 5.Press the UP or DOWN Button and select the tab containing ‘WPT1’ and press ENTER. 6.Press the UP or DOWN Button to select ‘WPT1’ and press ENTER. The ‘REVIEW WAYPOINT’ Page appears. 1

Intro to GPS – Exercise 1, Navigating 7.Press the UP or DOWN Button to highlight the ‘GOTO’, and press ENTER. 8.Press the PAGE button until you get to the Navigation Page. Use this page to walk to Wpt1. There should be a cache located in the vicinity. 9.Repeat steps 2-8 to navigate to Wpt2, Wp3, and Wpt4. End of Exercise 1 Challenge: If you notice anything interesting outside try making a waypoint by it (Hint: hold down the ENTER button to mark a waypoint) 2

Intro to GPS – Exercise 2, Downloading During the previous exercise you marked some waypoints and a track was collected of your location. Next you will download it from the GPS and view it in Arcmap. 1.Connect the Etrex GPS to the computer using a cable and turn on the GPS. 2.Run the DNR GPS application by double- clicking the DNR GPS shortcut on the desktop. 3.In the application that opens, go to GPS Find GPS. The GPS name and software version should appear on the form. 4.Go to Waypoint Download. The waypoints will be downloaded to the data table 3

Select “Shapefile” as the file type and save the waypoints to “c:\temp\mywaypoints.shp” 5.Repeat steps 4 and 5 with Tracks (Track Download and save to “c:\temp\mytracks.shp”). Save the tracks as a LINE. 6.Open Arcmap from the desktop and use the Add Data option to add your “mywaypoints.shp” and “mytracks.shp” files to your map. 7.In Arcmap go to File Add Data Add Basemap and select the “Imagery” basemap. 8.Explore your data in the map.
