3. NOTE TAKING TIP FOR SUMMARIZING OR PARAPHRASING READ THE INFORMATION. PUT IT AWAY AND WRITE YOUR SUMMARY/PARAPHRASE WITHOUT LOOKING AT IT. Summarizing Summarizing is the best kind of note-taking because it is the fastest. A summary condenses information, perhaps reducing a chapter to a short paragraph or a paragraph to a single sentence. A summary should be written in your own words. However, this information still came from a source and MUST BE CITED in the text of your paper. Paraphrasing Like a summary, a paraphrase is written in your own words, but whereas a summary reports significant information in fewer words than the source, a paraphrase retells the information in roughly the same number of words. You will discover that it is relatively easy to borrow too much language from a source as you paraphrase. Do not allow this to happen. You are guilty of plagiarism even if you half-copy the author’s sentences. A paraphrase should be written in your own words. However, this information still came from a source and MUST BE CITED in the text of your paper.
