2 The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner Randall Jarrell 1914-1965 Served as a pilot / navigation trainer of pilots in the Army Air Corps One of the most careful and learned readers of contemporary poetry In his poetic stance toward WWII, Jarrell often took the part of the dead who sought to understand the reasons for their death. The speaker sometimes present themselves as children who have barely learned the meaning of life before dying. Died when struck by a car while walking on a highway in NC. Questions arose: was it suicide?
