2 Sacajawea Was a Shoshone Indian Was the chief’s daughter Was kidnapped from her tribe when she was around 12-13 Was later sold to a French fur trader who made her one of his wives Assisted Lewis and Clark on their expedition

3 Cont. Was the only woman on the expedition Sacajawea was pregnant when the expedition began. She had her baby (Jean-Baptiste) during the journey and traveled with him on her back She served as a peace symbol, a translator, and a guide to the Corps (Indians saw them as less threatening because she was with them)

4 Cont. She died between the ages of 26-28 It is said that she died at Fort Mandan but it is uncertain if it was her or another one of her husband’s wives She gave birth to a daughter (Lisette) before she died. Clark took custody of her two children after her death

5 Facts Sacagawea means bird woman Sacagawea could speak the language of two different tribes. The Shoshone-her tribe and the Hidatsa-tribe that kidnapped her She found her long lost brother while on the expedition who supplied the Corps with horses

6 Facts 2 The Corps called Sacagawea’s son Pomp which means “first born” in the Shoshone language She was born in the Lemhi River Valley Sacagawea was put on a coin She was chosen over the Statue of Liberty to be put on the coin
