New Deal Programs – 1st Hundred Days
Emergency Banking Relief Act This authorized the Treasury Department to inspect banks and to close those that were unsound, with the greater goal of restoring public confidence in the banking system. Glass-Steagall Act This established the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), with the greater goal of restoring public confidence in the banking system. Federal Securities Act This required corporations to provide complete info on all stock offerings, with the greater goal of restoring public confidence in the stock market. Securities Exchange Commission SEC = Government agency set up by the Federal Securities Act to regulate the Stock Market.

Agricultural Adjustment Act This paid farmers to lower production and, in some cases, to destroy crops, with the greater goal of raising crop prices and farm income. Tennessee Valley Authority This helped to create prosperity in a poverty-stricken region by providing funds to build and repair dams, flood-control projects, and power plants. Civilian Conservation Corps. This put almost 3 million young men to work building roads, developing parks, and helping in soil-erosion and flood-control projects.

National Industrial Recovery Act This created an administration that set fair prices on many products and established labor standards, with the greater goal of ensuring fair business practices and promoting industrial growth. National Recovery Administration Government agency that set prices of many products, established standards for working hours, and a ban on child labor. Home Owners Loan Corporation Government agency that grants loans to homeowners who faced foreclosure because they could not meet loan payments. Federal Housing Administration Government agency that furnishes loans for home mortgages and repairs.

Works Progress Administration Agency created to create jobs for professionals from construction jobs to positions in symphony orchestras. Special effort for women and minorities. National Youth Association Agency created to provide job training for unemployed young people and part-time jobs for needy students. Wagner Act Legislation designed to protect workers rights by allowing for collective bargaining. This legislation was in response to NIRA being declared unconstitutional. National Labor Relations Board Government agency created to hear testimony about unfair practices and to hold elections to find out if workers wanted union representation.

Fair Labor Standards Act Legislation that set maximum work hours, minimum wages, set rules for employing people under the age of 16, and banned hazardous work for the under the age of 18. Social Security Act PART ONE: Old age insurance for retirees 65 or older and their spouses. PART TWO: Unemployment Compensation. PART THREE: Aid to families with dependent children and disabled.
