His interest in science began at an early age Read about dinosaurs Constructed a telescope by age 13 Too poor to attend college During World War II Clarke served as a radar instructor in the Royal Air Force, rising to the rank of flight lieutenant In 1956, he moved to Sri Lanka Took up underwater photography

Wrote the screenplay for 2001: A Space Odyssey with Stanley Kubrick (1968) Was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay Was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998 and became known as Sir Arthur Clarke Died on March 19, 2008
