2  Born Dec. 16 th, 1917 in England  Genre – science fiction and fantasy  Focused on exploration of other worlds (space and sea)  Wrote short stories, novels, and screenplays

3  His interest in science began at an early age  Read about dinosaurs  Constructed a telescope by age 13  Too poor to attend college  During World War II Clarke served as a radar instructor in the Royal Air Force, rising to the rank of flight lieutenant  In 1956, he moved to Sri Lanka  Took up underwater photography

4  Wrote the screenplay for 2001: A Space Odyssey with Stanley Kubrick (1968)  Was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay  Was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998 and became known as Sir Arthur Clarke  Died on March 19, 2008
