2 Definition  “Promises” made to the public and/or agencies  Negotiated actions with regulatory agencies (mitigation)  Easily understood by individuals with limited exposure to the environmental process  Help avoid or mitigate impacts to resources  Critical to follow through as part of NEPA  Action is required beyond approval of environmental document 2 Categorical Exclusion Training Class

3 Definition  Specifies type of plan note needed  Specific enough to inform designers of what must be incorporated in the plans  After environmental document approved, commitments are forwarded to District Production Office for incorporation into plans  The Environmental Commitment Tracking (ECT) software, currently being developed, will facilitate this action in the future  FHWA/OES Focus Area 3 Categorical Exclusion Training Class

4 Type of Commitments  Commitments can include, but not limited to:  Indiana bat habitat protection  No in-water work during fish spawning periods  No work within historic boundaries of an eligible or listed NRHP site  No restriction of access to public parks  Obtaining Waterway Permit during final design 4 Categorical Exclusion Training Class
