RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 2 Agenda  RMDCN Configuration  RMDCN Next Generation  Migration

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 3 RMDCN configuration  RMDCN currently provides connections to 49 sites :  45 national meteorological services  ECMWF  EUMETSAT (2 sites)  1 disaster recovery site for The Netherlands  Access bandwidth ranges from 128kbps to 100 Mbps

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 4 RMDCN Geographical coverage

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 5 RA VI countries not connected to the RMDCN

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 6 Agenda  RMDCN Configuration  RMDCN NG  Migration

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 7 Key dates in procurement process  30-31 January 2012- TAC Subgroup on the RMDCN (Meeting 3)  15 February 2012- ITT issued  23 April 2012- Deadline for responses – several bids had been received  May – October 2012- Evaluation and negotiation  8-9 October 2012- TAC Subgroup on the RMDCN (Meeting 4) –Members of the WMO Task Team on the RMDCN and two other WMO observers attended the TAC Subgroup on the RMDCN  4-5 December 2012- ECMWF Council  December 2012- Contract signature ECMWF/2012/207 Evaluation 7

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 8 New RMDCN Contract – con’t  Similar terms and conditions to the current RMDCN contract  The main contract applies to all users of the RMDCN –ECMWF, ECMWF Countries and Acceding Parties  In addition Acceding Parties will have to sign an Accession Agreement with the Contractor ECMWF/2012/207 Contract 8

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 9 Agenda  RMDCN Configuration  RMDCN NG  Migration

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 10 Pilot Network  The first step of the migration plan is to deploy a Pilot Network in the first half of 2013 in order to check out the new provider’s capabilities –sites that are representative for the whole community : ECMWF Member States, RA VI sites and sites outside Europe  The sites participating in the Pilot Network are: Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Bulgaria, Japan and ECMWF

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 11 Migration timetable  Following acceptance of the Pilot Network, orders will be submitted on 1 July 2013 for all sites that have agreed their configuration –cut-off date for sites to be part of the so-called Initial Deployment  As part of the migration, ECMWF will act as a gateway between the current OBS network and the new network –all RMDCN sites to continue to inter-communicate during the migration

RMDCN status & plan,February 2013 12 Migration  To minimise the overhead of running parallel networks, ECMWF plans to cancel their connection to the OBS network shortly after completion of the one-month migration window –currently planned to end on 6 February 2014  ECMWF’s gateway function will continue to be available for a further 3 months (until early May 2014) –Once the gateway function is stopped, RMDCN sites that are not connected to the new network will not be able to communicate with the RMDCN community  All currently connected sites are strongly advised to sign their Accession Agreements, if required, and to order their connections before 1 July 2013, so that they can be part of the Initial Deployment  Sites ordering their connection to the new network after 1 July 2013 will not be connected to the RMDCN until after the end of the one-month migration window (February 2014), on a business-as-usual basis
