Overview Immigrants had always come to America for economic opportunity and religious freedom. Beginning in the 1870s, Italian birthrates rose and death rates fell. Until the 1870s, the majority had been protestants from northern and western Europe. Two types of factors led to immigration. Push factors are those that compel people to leave their homes, such as famine, war, or persecution. Pull factors are those factors that made the immigrants want to come to the nation. Freedom, Land, Religion. All of these examples are pull factors to the United States.
