Presentation Overview 1.Challenges in the case study 2.Strong points in the findings 3.Next steps 4.Shaping the recommendations
3
1. Challenges in the Case Study
4
River Basin has 2 definitions (map) –Administrative boundaries –Physical boundaries (upstream) some important environmental issues are not well monitored in the statistical system, e.g. mining (figure) (downstream) Craft industry development takes place at village level but statistical data is only available at commune level Challenges of the case study
5
2. Strong Points in the Findings
6
Detailed picture (and proof) of poverty contrasts between upstream and downstream; –e.g. access to services Issues and opportunities in upstream are broader than forestry only Upstream & downstream have shared interest in environmental management –Access to clean water –Biodiversity and landscape management. Strong points in the findings
7
3. Need for further work
8
Poverty-Environment at village Vs commune level, –Upstream – villages from different ethnic groups –Downstream – industrial and agricultural villages Mapping the linkages between poverty and environment Need for further work
9
4. Shaping the recommendations
10
Balance between soft and hard investments –Soft – environmental awareness, stakeholder coordination –Hard – investments, e.g. engineering work Do not wait for further research (although this is needed) to target the villages with hard investments, e.g. clean water Design appropriate awareness messages that build on shared interests between upstream and downstream Shaping the recommendations
