Chapter 5 Tissues
3
5 - 3 Muscle Tissues: A.General Characteristics 1.Muscle cells, or fibers, are specialized for contraction 2. Cell membrane is called sarcolemma. 3. Cytoplasm is called sarcoplasm. 4. There are three types of muscle tissue. u Skeletal muscle u Cardiac muscle u Smooth muscle u Copyright The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. Permission required for reproduction or display.

5 - 4 B.Skeletal Muscle Tissue u Very large fibers u Multinucleated (many nuclei) u Cannot divide to reproduce because are so large and contain so many nuclei but mesenchymal cells (called satellite cells) can divide to repair damage u Actin and myosin protein filaments are arranged in repeating patterns, which creates visible bands called striations u Are voluntary (under conscious control) u Are connected to bone by connective tissue (tendons) u Copyright The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. 5 - 6 C.Smooth Muscle Tissue u Small, spindle-shaped(fusiform)cells with a single nucleus u Cells can divide to repair injury u Actin and myosin proteins are arranged in a different pattern so that there are no striations u Involuntary (not under conscious control) u Found in the walls of blood vessels, hollow organs, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and reproductive tracts u Copyright The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. 5 - 8 D.Cardiac Muscle Tissue u Smaller than skeletal muscle fiber but larger than smooth muscle cell u Cells are called cardiocytes or cardiac myocytes and are involuntary u May have from 1-5 nuclei u Has striations like skeletal muscle u Cells are too large and have too many nuclei to divide, so cannot regenerate to repair injury u Cells are extensively connected at sites called intercalated disks- these help to conduct contractions smoothly along the entire muscle (causes beating of entire heart muscle) u Found only in the heart u Copyright The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. 5 - 10 Nervous (Neural) Tissues: u Specialized to carry electrical impulses u Greatest concentration of neural tissue in the human body is located in the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system (CNS).) u Contains two type of cells Neurons: are the longest cells in the human body, are incapable of dividing, very limited ability to repair itself Neuroglia: supporting cells that maintain structure of the tissue, repair framework after injury, assist in protection of tissue from pathogens, assist in nutrition of tissue u Copyright The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.
