Non-Academic Barriers to Student Learning Many students face non-academic barriers, including: poverty or privilege family discord/violence substance abuse lack of adequate nutrition physical neglect peer relations mental or chronic physical illness of the student or family member Students come to school with a constellation of personal, social and familial issues they cannot check at the door.

Power of Parenting This program is being offered for parents at all four of our middle schools, and is designed to address some of the challenges parents face raising teens in our current culture. am is being offered Parents learn the importance of becoming more involved with their teenagers by facilitating open and honest communication. The program provides evidence-based strategies to help support you and your child, especially during the challenging transitional years. Some of the topics that will be covered include: Snapshot of our teens, parenting and communication styles, red flags/warning signs, problem solving with your child, strategies for reducing risky behaviors, and resources for support. Dublin parents are welcome to attend any of the courses at any of our four middle schools.
