RATIONALE QAA Audit of Research Degree Programmes 2006 UoW Training Programme Review Group Launch of the Researcher Development Framework
4
DRDP PRINCIPLES Enabling doctoral researcher development Accessible to all modes of study Encouraging self-directed development and reflective practice Continuous development supported by burst-mode delivery Co-delivered by academics and researcher development experts/professionals Provision underpins/reinforces the key academic stages
5
DESIGN PROCESS STAGE 1 Mapped existing provision against the RDF Gap Analysis – against all 63 RDF Descriptors Agreed key delivery responsibility for each RDF Descriptor (e.g. Supervisor, Faculty, University) STAGE 2 Development of new programme Thematic strands : key descriptors grouped together Mapped across academic years
6
COHORT APPROACH! Comparatively small PGR community Provision delivered on a cohort basis is feasible Programme structure supports PGR Community/Culture reinforces key messages and themes throughout the programme: Faculty Workshops University Workshops Specialist Skills Sessions Supervisor Doctoral Researcher PDP and Reflective Practice
7
SOME CRITICAL REFLECTIONS Success requires University Buy-In and Engagement Supervisors programme engagement and support Researchers co-delivery and programme development; capacity building Doctoral Researchers high pressure to complete, competing interests nature of development activity: long term benefits are not obvious initially
