Iceman Story In 1991, an Iceman was accidentally found by hikers from Europe. Scientists took his body to a laboratory. Scientists found that his clothing, body, and tools were well preserved. He was believed to be from around 3000 B.C. One tool he had was a copper ax. Copper was the first metal used by Europeans, beginning around 4000 B.C.

Before and After Writing
Writing began around 3000 B.C. in Southwest Asia and Africa. They began to keep written records of their life. History – written and other recorded events of people. Prehistory – the time before history. The time before writing was invented.

Prehistory: Digging up the Past
Archaeologists – scientists who examine objects to learn about past peoples and cultures. Archaeologists rely on clues to study the prehistoric time period. They dig through dirt to find bones, tools, and other objects.

History: A Record in Writing
Historians do not only rely on the findings of archaeologists to study the past. They also use written records of human life to study societies. What are they studying? Wars, Religion, Rulers (Kings)

Oral Traditions – stories passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth.

Linking Geography and History
Understanding why historic events took place is important. To do this, historians often look at the links between geography and history. Example: To explain why the ancient Egyptians developed a successful civilization, you need to look at the geography of Egypt. Egypt used the Nile River to help them stay alive.

Homework Assignment After reading section 1 on pages 6 – 9 and looking back through your notes, you should be able to answer the following questions. Answer all 6 questions in the Comprehension and Critical Thinking Section on page 9. The questions are found in the Section 1 Assessment on page 9. Write the question & answer.
