5 Before and After Writing
Writing began around 3000 B.C. in Southwest Asia and Africa. They began to keep written records of their life. History – written and other recorded events of people. Prehistory – the time before history. The time before writing was invented.

6 Prehistory: Digging up the Past
Archaeologists – scientists who examine objects to learn about past peoples and cultures. Archaeologists rely on clues to study the prehistoric time period. They dig through dirt to find bones, tools, and other objects.

7 History: A Record in Writing
Historians do not only rely on the findings of archaeologists to study the past. They also use written records of human life to study societies. What are they studying? Wars, Religion, Rulers (Kings)

8 A Record of the Spoken Word
Oral Traditions – stories passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth.

9 Linking Geography and History
