2
12 3 Graphics Used with a purpose, a graphic TECHNIQUE enhances readability. SPOT COLOR IS VERSATILE AND AFFORDABLE. PROCESS COLOR OFFERS REALISM. TINTS ARE LIGHTER VERSIONS OF COLOR, INCLUDING BLACK. LINES OFFER OPTIONS. Thick, thin, vertical, horizontal, black or colored WHITE SPACE FUNCTIONS AS AN EFFECTIVE GRAPHIC TECHNIQUE.
3
12 3 Graphics SPOT COLOR, like the name implies, works best to highlight content in strategic spots.
4
12 3 Graphics PROCESS COLOR adds realism to the photography and allows for dynamic graphics.
5
12 3 Graphics TINTS: Shades of black create gray tones. Shades range from solid [100%] to light [10%].
6
12 3 Graphics LINES: Contrast is created by using thin [1 pt.] and thick lines [12 pt]. Lines are measured in points.
7
12 3 Graphics Graphic STRATEGIES should always be used for content-driven reasons. 1. GRAPHICS DIRECT READERS TO AND THROUGH CONTENT - Readers do not realize they are being guided when effective graphics are used 2. GRAPHIC TECHNIQUES UNIFY OR SEPARATE CONTENT ELEMENTS - Used to unify elements or separate unrelated elements 3. GRAPHICS EMPHASIZE OR DE- EMPHASIZE CONTENT - Call attention to important elements or differentiate primary and subordinate elements Solid color = emphasis Tints = de-emphasis 4. DESIGNERS USE GRAPHICS TO ADD PERSONALITY - More interesting to readers - Consistent theme or graphic technique throughout effectively links content and design
8
12 3 Graphics GRAPHIC REPEAT: Circular graphics, consistent fonts and the green color unify this spread.
9
12 3 Graphics UNIFIED: Lines frame the spread creating unity. The use of blue is inspired by the colors in the photos.
10
12 3 Graphics GRAPHIC REPEAT: Circular shapes and rounded corners unify the design.
11
1 3 2 Graphics Tools and sources impact graphic TRENDS in yearbooks. YEARBOOKS FEATURE A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE USE OF PROCESS COLOR - Most popular YEARBOOK DESIGN SHOWS THE IMPACT OF ELECTRONIC TOOLS - Needs to be planned and controlled YEARBOOK DESIGNERS CAN LOOK TO MANY SOURCES FOR INSPIRATION - Magazines, web pages, catalogs, etc. DESIGNERS SHOULD ADAPT IDEAS, NOT COPY THEM - Sources inspire creative thinking – do not copy
12
1 3 2 Graphics SELECTIVE: Color is used to emphasize a single player in the photo and a single word in the headline.
13
1 3 2 Graphics TRENDY: This spread is inspired by the popularity of scrapbooking.
14
1 3 2 Graphics GRAPHIC REPEATS: Several graphic techniques are strategically repeated for continuity on this spread.
