MODULE 19: DESIGN 3
2
12 3 Design 3 MODULAR DESIGN expands coverage and design options. PHOTO BLOCKS BECOME CONTENT MODULES. MODULAR DESIGN FOSTERS A TEAM APPROACH. NEWSPAPERS PIONEERED THE MODULAR APPROACH. FROM TRADITIONAL TO MAXIMIZED, MODULAR DESIGN APPROACHES OFFER FLEXIBILITY.
3
12 3 Design 3 TRADITIONAL APPROACH: Features mainly traditional photo, story and caption modules.
4
12 3 Design 3 EXPANDED APPROACH: Features a more traditional look while incorporating several content modules.
5
12 3 Design 3 MAXIMIZED APPROACH: The ultimate verbal and visual display; all modules present content.
6
12 3 Design 3 Content modules are MINI- DESIGNS built on a base layer of vertical columns and horizontal grids. MODULAR DESIGNS ARE BUILT USING A THREE-LAYER APPROACH. Base – framework (horizontal/vertical grid) Modular – templates are used Content – information/photos BASIC DESIGN STRATEGIES AND RULES APPLY TO MODULES AND SPREADS.
7
12 3 Design 3 BASE LAYER: A framework of vertical columns and horizontal guides.
8
12 3 Design 3 MODULAR LAYER: Modules are placed on the base layer following the columns and grids.
9
12 3 Design 3 CONTENT LAYER: Spaces on the modular layer are now filled with custom-built content modules.
10
1 3 2 Design 3 The individually designed modules must work together to create VISUAL UNITY on a spread. SUBTLE REPETITION IS THE KEY TO VISUALLY UNIFYING CONTENT MODULES. A HEADLINE VISUALLY AND VERBALLY UNIFIES THE SPREAD. STORY MODULES FEATURE MINI-HEADLINES AND PHOTOS. PHOTO MODULES ARE ENHANCED BY DOMINANCE AND EYELINES.
11
1 3 2 Design 3 LEVEL ONE: The dominant module now features a montage, replacing a single photo with four images.
12
1 3 2 Design 3 LEVEL TWO: A photo block is replaced with a quick read story presentation featuring two photos.
13
1 3 2 Design 3 LEVEL THREE: An infograph is added, allowing facts and figures to be presented in a visual way.
14
1 3 2 Design 3 LEVEL FOUR: A timeline is included. There are 19 photos on this spread using a maximized approach.
15
QUICK READ SAMPLER Figures: table, Index, listing, stats, chart, scoreboard, pie chart Facts: fact box, listing, top 10, summary points, map, diagram, definitions, profile Opinions: quotes, q & a, for/against, personal narrative, journal, advice Time: schedule, calendar, timeline Interactive: fill-in, matching, connect the dots, color and object, check test, crossword puzzle, word search, quiz.
