6-2 Solving Inequalities by Multiplication and Division Objective: Students will be able to solve linear inequalities by using multiplication and division.

Here is a true inequality: 6<14 Now divide both sides by 2. Is the inequality still true? Go back to the original inequality. Now divide both sides by a -2. Is the inequality still true?

Here is another true inequality: 11>3 Multiply both sides by 3. Is the inequality still true? Now go back to the original inequality. Multiply both sides by a -3. Is the inequality still true?

What can we deduce from the previous two slides? When dividing or multiplying both sides of an inequality by a negative number, we need to flip the inequality symbol.
