6 Function and history of laminated glass!
Windshields are considered “Laminated Glass”. A thin transparent layer of PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) adhesive thermoplastic is sandwiched between two sheets of glass. The PVB holds the glass together in an accident. PVB adhesive is what makes recycling windshields difficult. Lamination of glass with PVB is required in windshields (since 1930…) for safety. Use of laminated glass in cars is growing globally as a result of increasing applications to reduce sound in side windows and rear windows. Laminated glass is also widely used in buiding glass for safely, sound reduction and UV protection. About 50% of recycled laminated glass comes from building industry! Function and history of laminated glass!

7 What IS PVB (PolyVinyl Butyral)
Polyvinyl butyral (or PVB) is a resin usually used for applications that require strong binding, optical clarity, adhesion to many surfaces, toughness and flexibility. It is prepared from polyvinyl alcohol by reaction with butyraldehyde. Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) was pioneered by Solutia as the key ingredient for automotive safety glass interlayers. Generic (virgin) applications include: Laminated glass for automotive and architectural applications – and for solar modules Coating for lumber, metals, concrete and many other surfaces Binder for inks, paints and coatings Binders and adhesives for metals, glass and many other materials As a recycled product PVB can be used to substitute many other types of resins / additives for increased toughness and flexibility. Shark Solutions is using a recycled raw material not expensive and volatile virgin raw materials recycled PVB competes with e.g. PVC compounds and many other raw materials; much cheaper than virgin PVB. Application of PVB: Coating for lumber: The surface-finishing agent for glued boards, substratum coatings for hard boards and insulating materials. Coating for metals: Mixed with other natural resins, synthetic resins and drying oil, it can better the resistance to impact, flexibility and bond ability of thermo set resins. Priming paint for metals: PVB resin has very strong adhesiveness to metals, and good bond ability to surface coatings. So it can be used as a priming paint for metallic materials, such as steel, aluminium, galvanized iron, copper and so on. And it is widely exploited in boats and ships, bridges, aircrafts and electron devices, etc. Concrete coating: PVB liquor can be used as substratum coating; the durability of water emulsion coating film can be improved. Waterproof coating: As a waterproof coating, good result can be achieved after PVB is added, and it can be used for making tents, overcoats, food bags, etc. Protective coating for gloss surfaces: It is used as varnish for wooden handicrafts, paint for wires and other metal plating surfaces. Coating for leather: The thin film of PVB shows its very strong extensibility at normal temperature, and it can also maintain this property at low temperature. As a result, it can be used to produce soft and elastic leather films for its distinctive character. Coating for vacuum vapour deposition: PVB liquor can be adhesive to the surfaces of plastic, paper and metals. So it can be used for vacuum vapour deposition, for instance, the adhesive for vacuum aluminium plating and the coating for its processing surface. Coating for metal foil: Coat PVB liquor on metal foil, then the strength and moisture resistance of foil can be improved, and heat sealing just can wrap foil wholly, applying to the package of foodstuff, such as chocolate, biscuits, and automatic packing of medicine and camera attachments, etc. Oil-ink for metals: Mixed with nitro-cotton and malefic acid resin, etc., it can be used as oil-ink for aluminium and copper sheets, etc. Used as adhesives: Adhesive to enamel-insulated coils of wire: Coat PVB liquor on the coils and heat it, then the coils can be adhered. Adhesive to metals: When PVB is mixed with phenolic resin, it can be made up into acetal phenolic glue of different specifications and used to adhere various metals. Coat the liquor on the surfaces of metals, and after it vaporises, the coated metals are pressed heat. Adhesive to glass: PVB resin has very high adhesive force; it is used to adhere glass for its moderate elasticity and softness. Adhesive for "Transfer Printing Trademarks": PVB can be used as the adhesive agent of "Transfer Printing Trademarks" For porcelains. For instance, "Pattern Papers for Porcelains" has become one of its important uses. In addition, it can also be used for "Transfer Printing Trademarks" in textile products. Pressure-sensitive adhesive: It is used as raw material of pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, such as the adhesive tape for glass paper, polyethylene adhesive tape and so forth. Adhesive for heat sealing: PVB can be mixed with natural resins, synthetic resins and plasticizing agent and used as adhesive for heat sealing. Film adhesive bond: PVB is mixed with other synthetic resins, synthetic rubber and plasticizing agent, then it can be used to adhere cloths or other materials by heating. Adhesives for other uses: PVB can be used as materials to produce adhesive for non-woven fabric, adhesive for electrostatic flocking and adhesive for leather. Application in fiber processing’s: Coating: Coat PVB liquor added in with plasticizing agent on kinds of textile products, and the goods are awarded the properties of water-proofness and resistance to soiling, etc., and it won't destroy the original feel and style. And the processing result can be improved by adding cross-linking resin and curing agent in, etc. PVB emulsion can also be processed in this way. Dyeing and printing of clothes: Both PVB liquor and emulsion can be used for dyeing and printing of cloths. Furthermore, the dyeing and printing result is satisfying. It is good in washing resistance and non-discoloration. The abrasion-proofness and pliability of cloths can be improved by improved by finishing with other resins What IS PVB (PolyVinyl Butyral) 7

13 ”Characteristics” about Shark’s Recycled PVB
Recycled Shark Solutions PVB raw material characteristics: Recycled PVB is two to three parts of resin and one part plasticizer Shark Solutions developed a patentable industrialized and sophisticated technology to ”clean” the PVB from impurities of glass, rubber, silicone, and other contamination which will always be present in small amounts. Shark PVB quality is continually improving and based on application requirements. Process parameters, repeat lab testing and 3rd party outside labs are used to qualify, monitor and control within tight specifications. Current specification PVB dispersion filtered removing any contamination >200 microns average d50 PVB particle size <0,15 microns (SharkDispersionMW) ”Characteristics” about Shark’s Recycled PVB

16 PVB Dispersion – as co-binder…
PVB dispersion offers advantages and can be used as a co-binder along with other binders. Works with Acrylic, Styrene Acrylic emulsions, PVA emulsions, Epoxy Acrylics and generally the compatibility is excellent. Generally as a good starting point we recommend to replace % of current binder – solids to solids. Most likely you should be able to save part of or all of the film forming agents when Shark dispersion is used as a co-binder. Shark Dispersion can be used for paints as the direct carrier for color substances, antistatic or conditioners. The Dispersions are forming a uniform film during the drying phase with the help from film forming agents: Coalescing agents or plasticizers. In that respect the films can act as adhesives to some substrates.  The main advantages of PVB compared to other resins are: extremely high flexibility combined with film toughness no tackiness excellent blocking resistance PVB Dispersion – as co-binder…

18 ”Issues” about Recycled PVB
As we use recycled raw material there are certain characteristics you – as a customer/user – need to be aware of: We do not change the chemistry of the material i.e. the PVB is plastizized (est. 25%) Variances in product chemistry is natural since our raw material is blend from various virgin manufacturers products Shark Solutions has developed an industrialized and sophisticated know how about how to ”clean” the PVB from impurities of glass, rubber, silicones and other contamination which will always be present in a recycled raw material supply stream; e.g. other polymers/plastics, wood chips, metals, etc. We constantly improve the quality level i.e. reduce level of contamination. At the moment our specifications are for our PVB-flakes: C3 grade; contamination <4%. Moisture contained <3%. C2 grade; contamination <1%. Moisture contained <3%. C1 grade; contamination <0,5%. Moisture contained <8%. As part of above mentioned contamination is in all cases <0,1% glass! For further cleaned products we offer our PVB e.g. as pellets/granules, which are extruded and thus beeing filtered, which takes away any impurities >110 microns and moisture level gets below 2%. We also provide PVB as a water based PVB dispersion; in this case the dispersion is filtered removing any contamination >200 microns – with average d50 PVB particle size <0,15 microns (SharkDispersionMW)
