1. First Class communication in european projects What is First Class ? First Class is perhaps the most used communication program in the world. It runs through the Internet, but uses a small client to give the user a very clear and simple conference interface. The european project will use the First Class program provided by the County of Aarhus, Denmark. It is a very safe system and you can communicate with this First Class system from all over the world. You can use the program from your workplace or from home. Furthermore you will be able to work in a language familiar to you, perhaps even in your own language. On the following pages we will give you a brief introduction to the use of First Class. You can freely download the First Class client from this webpage and choose the language version, you prefere: www.firstclass.com/ClientDownloads/IntlClients/www.firstclass.com/ClientDownloads/IntlClients/( this is a direct link to the webpage). The licenses will be paid for by the project. Follow the installation instructions on the webpage. The downloaded file is not the client itself, but an installation file. When you activate the installation file, the client will be installed on your computer. You can put the conference icon on your desktop. Now, we can link the client to the danish First Class server. First Class communication in european projects How to set up the First Class client to this european cooperation…2 In the configuration window it is important, that you write the correct server connection: fc.supportcenter.dk This adress links your client to the conference system, we will use in the european cooperation. We cannot give advice about how the First Class client works with your internet connection. If your computer is using an institutional network to get access to the Internet, this is normally no problem. If you have a special Internet connection, you might have to ask a technician for support, when you work on the configuration of the client. 5. First Class communication in european projects How to log on… When you have checked the few things mentioned on the last two pages, you can open the client and log on. You have received a user-ID and a password from the project coordinators and you just write these informations in the forms. If you are working on a private computer, you can choose to save these informations, so it will be easier to log on. ”Gem” is ”Save” in danish, ”Adgangskode” is ”Password” in danish. Now you can log on and start working! When you have logged on, you are free to change your password. Choose Cooperation in the top menu and then New password. 6. First Class communication in european projects Your First Class desktop… Here you see an example of a First Class desktop. You will perhaps only have a few icons. The only icons you should be concerned about are: → your project conference → your mailbox. The client does not work like internet pages. The conferences open on top of each other and you can open as many conferences or message windows as you like. Let us enter the project conference. 7. First Class communication in european projects The project conferences… You have now entered the main project conference. In the top section you have subconferences, concerning specific topics. In the lower section you have messages written to this main conference. The messages section works just like e-mails. The important diffence, though, is, that everybody in the project can read the messages – and answer them. All the subconferences are organized this way. It is very simple and user friendly. The total structure of the conferences is the project virtual environment and it will change in time - according to the needs of the project. 8. First Class communication in european projects Posting messages… In the conference you click on the letter icon top left. Now you get a message window. Just like an e-mail. You give the message a name (”Emne” in danish) and you write your message. The message window has very fine editing facilities. You can attache a file, you can establish your own personal mailing lists, and you send the message to the conference by clicking on the postmark top left. Note: when you roll over the icons with the mouse, you will get information about the functionality of the icons ! When you wish to post a message, you must be in the right conference, of course. 9. First Class communication in european projects Replying… You open the message, you want to reply to. Then you reply by clicking on the reply icon top left. You will get a message window, and you post this reply by clicking on the post mark top left in the message menu. In this way the messages concerning a special topic will be grouped and it will be easier to follow the different dialogues. You can also ”reply” on a ”reply”, of course. So, a good advice: remember to make a reply, when commenting on a message, instead of posting a new message. 10. First Class communication in european projects Your First Class personal mailbox… You enter your personal mailbox from the First Class desktop window. This mailbox works like every other mail system. The icons in the top section are not conferences, but folders. You can insert all the folders you wish - to organize your personal mail. Right click in the top section and choose new folder. You can choose an icon and a name for your folder. You can draw a mail from the mail section into a specific folder any time you want. To post a message you just click on the letter icon top left – just like in the conferences. You must type the e-mail adress and press RETURN. So it is worth while to learn to use all the facilities in the program. You can get more knowledge on www.firstclass.com - and by clicking on the help function in the First Class window.
