© 2010 IBM Corporation Smarter Systems for a Smarter Planet 2 In 1999 10 Billion Paper bags used in US alone – thats a lot of trees! As a result, they are everywhere. They sit balled up and stuffed into the one that hangs from the pantry door. They line bathroom trash bins. They carry clothes to the gym. They clutter landfills. They flap from trees. They float in the breeze. They clog roadside drains. They drift on the high seas. They fill sea turtle bellies. National Geographic Online Between 500 BILLION and 1 TRILLION plastic bags are used worldwide every year 2.5 Million Tons of Supermarket plastic bags disposed in 2008 Solution : Stop using disposable bags, and change our habit as Shoppers…

© 2010 IBM Corporation Smarter Systems for a Smarter Planet 4 Lets step back a second… What do we mean by Enterprise? Enterprise has always been thought of as large companies Spending tens or hundreds of million $ on IT infrastructure These companies expect : –24x7x365 availability (or the traditional 5x9s at least!) –Expandability beyond initial purchases –Fault tolerance and the ability to recover from disaster –The leading edge technology for speeds and feeds 4 So a smaller customer doesnt need the same from their IT systems? OF COURSE THEY DO !!! In todays 24x7 culture –Even the smallest of businesses suffer from downtime of IT systems –They are likely to have a web presence –The impact of their systems failing could impact their very survival

© 2010 IBM Corporation Smarter Systems for a Smarter Planet 5 The problems with traditional Midrange Storage So why have storage vendors been able to get away with producing midrange boxes? (IBM included) Much less reliability Less features and functions –usually at substantial additional cost Average speeds and feeds –usually controller limited, not disk limited 5 Often they are even more complicated and therefore more costly to manage than Enterprise boxes With the explosion of data throughout all businesses the issues are the same How do we manage all this stuff? How do we grow in line with our business growth? How do we recover should it go wrong? How do we meet our compliance requirements? How do we make ourselves more efficient? How can we make better use of what we already have?

© 2010 IBM Corporation Smarter Systems for a Smarter Planet 6 Do we want our datacenter like this? How do we stop this? We need the same kind of habitual change Weve all made the leap to modular virtual servers Why not the same for our storage?

Bring you Enterprise Class storage, at a midrange cost point? as well as … Manage the information explosion without complexity Improve productivity - by doing more with less Increase storage utilization Start small and grow by adding building block modules Quickly integrate into your existing storage Enhance storage efficiency with Advanced Storage Software
