What does it mean to be a CHRISTIAN? ROMANS 12:2

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2

“Do not be conformed…” – Refers to conforming one’s self (i.e. one’s mind and character) to another’s pattern, in this case the world (cf. 1 Pet 1:14). – The wording implies that some Christians in Rome where already doing this. – This has always been God’s plea for His people: Deu 18:9-14; 2 Cor 6:14-7:1; Jms 4:4.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2
6
“Be transformed in mind…” – Grk. metamorphoo ̄. Denotes a dramatic change in appearance. Same as in Mat 17:2; 2 Cor 3:18. – Paul is contrasting haphazard “conformity” to the world with a purposeful “transformation” that comes from “renewing” one’s mind. – This kind of “transformation” occurs by the working of the Holy Spirit through God’s word. Col 3:5-17; Php 4:8; Psa 119:11

“Prove God’s will.” – “Prove” (Grk. dokimazo), has the sense of finding out the worth of something by testing it in actual practice. Luk 14:19; 1 Tim 3:10; 1 Jhn 4:1 – Paul is calling for Christians to “prove” God’s will to be “good, acceptable and perfect” by doing it. – God has always called for His people to “prove” Him and His will: Mal 3:10; Psa 34:8

Areas where Christians are tempted to not be Christians: – Modesty The world says: Expensive, brand name clothes are essential and the sexier the better. Transform your mind with God’s word: – Costly attire is immodest (1 Tim 2:9-10). – Sensuality is sin (1 Pet 4:3). – Your body is God’s temple (1 Cor 6:19). Prove God’s will by living to bring Him glory and not to yourself.
11
Areas where Christians are tempted to not be Christians: – Morals The world says: Morals change with the times, if in fact, there is such a thing as a standard of morals. Transform your mind with God’s word: – Man’s way leads to death (Pro 14:12). – God’s Scripture stands alone (2 Tim 3:16). Prove God’s will by rejecting the worlds shifting standards and cling to God’s word as your standard for your life.
12
Some areas where Christians are tempted to not be Christians: – Materialism The world says: You are what you own, money will bring you security and happiness. Transform your mind with God’s word: – Riches will not save you (Pro 11:4). – The love of money is evil (1 Tim 6:6-10). – Be content, I am with you (Heb 13:5). Prove God’s will by living a life devoted loyal to Him and His kingdom not stuff.
13
Some areas where Christians are tempted to not be Christians: – Marriages The world says: Marriage is the ol’ ball and chain. Submit!? Be your own woman or man, look out for yourself. Transform your mind with God’s word: – Be one with your mate for life (Gen 2:24). – The marriage union reflects Christ’s relationship with the church (Eph 5:22-33). Prove God’s will by loving and serving your mate as Christ does the church.
