INTRODUCTION TO THE UN The UN was formed on October 24, 1945 when representatives of 51 countries signed the UN charter.

UN COUNTRIES The UN is an organization of 192 countries from all over the world.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY Parliament of nations It consists of representatives of all member nations It can discuss any matter such as peace and security, admission of new members and money matters The General Assembly meets once a year for a period of three months (September - December) 2000 - discussed & created MDGs

SECURITY COUNCIL Responsible for international peace & security 15 members: five permanent and ten non-permanent China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom & the United States

SECURITY COUNCIL CONTINUED The other 10 members of the security council are elected by the General Assembly Each council member has one vote. The five permanent members have VETO power Decisions require nine yes votes & zero veto votes

ECONOMIC & SOCIAL COUNCIL 54 members elected by the General Assembly Economic issues (trade, transport, industrialization) and social issues It promotes respect for human rights & freedom for all

TRUSTEESHIP COUNCIL Helped the independence of the 11 Trust Territories Finished in 1994 Palau

INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE The judicial branch of the UN Voluntary country disputes (not individual) 15 judges elected by the General Assembly & Security Council Each Judge serves 9 years Court headquarters at The Hague, in the Netherlands

SECRETARIAT It carries out the day to day work of the organization Peacekeeping, economic & social trends, human rights, etc. Informing the global community

SECRETARY GENERAL Secretary General is the head of the Secretariat Ban Ki-Moon Became Secretary General on January 1, 2007 He is from the Republic of Korea (South Korea)
