ELEMENTS OF POETRY USING “THE RAVEN” BY EDGAR ALLEN POE
4
MOOD The feeling a poem creates for the reader or the characters feelings Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore— While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door— "'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door— Only this and nothing more.“ WHAT MOOD DOES THIS STANZA SET?
5
REFRAIN The repetition of one or more phrases or lines at certain intervals, usually at the end of each stanza Similar to the chorus in a song. LOOK AT YOUR COPY OF “THE RAVEN” AND WITH YOUR SHOULDER PARTNER, DETERMINE THE REFRAIN HINT: THERE ARE TWO
6
RHYME SCHEME The pattern in which the end rhyme occurs Example: Continuous as the stars that shine (A) And twinkle on the milky way, (B) They stretched in never-ending line (A) Along the margin of a bay: (B) Ten thousand saw I at a glance, (C) Tossing their heads in sprightly dance(C) LOOK AT STANZA 3 AND DETERMINE THE RHYME SCHEME
7
TONE The attitude a poet takes toward his/her subject Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December; And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow;—vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the lost Lenore— For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore— Nameless here for evermore. – WHAT IS THE TONE?
8
IMAGERY Representation of the five senses: sight, taste, touch, sound, and smell Creates mental images about a poem’s subject CAN YOU FIND IMAGERY IN THE FIRST 3 STANZAS?
9
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE USE OF SIMILES, METAPHORS, PERSONIFICATION, ALLITERATION, ONOMATOPOEIA, OR IDIOMS CAN YOU FIND FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN STANZA 1? WHAT ARE THEY? WHY DID POE USE THESE FORMS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE?
